Yerevan/Mediamax/. "Salvador Dali and the Surrealists” exhibition, due to open on July 7 in the National Art Gallery, will become a "revelation for Armenia,” head of the Painting Department of the gallery, curator of the project Irina Baghdamyan, said in the interview to Mediamax.
The exposition features 160 works from personal collection of the renowned French publisher and collector Pierre Argyle. The visitors of the gallery can see 120 original etchings of Salvador Dali, most of which was created in the period between 1934 and 1973 and was included into the golden fund of gravure of 20th century.
The Yerevan exposition also includes Dali’s illustrations to works by French poet Pierre de Ronsard, to Goethe’s “Faust” and an illustration to “Don Juan”.
Works from “Hippy” and “Mythology” series will be also exhibited.
“Dali is distinguished by his free interpretation of such famous mythological heroes as Narcissus, Venus, Medusa the Gorgon,” the curator ща the exhibition stated. Besides Dali’s etchings, famous tapestry will be also exhibited.
Irina Baghdamyan added that the exhibition also features works by other surrealists, particularly German artist Hans Bellmer, French artist Leonor Fini, Italian painter Giorgio de Chirico. Paintings by Jean Cocteau, as well as earlier works by Vasily Kandinsky will be also presented at the exhibition.
All works from personal collection of Argyle family were provided by publisher’s daughter Christine Argyle, who will be in Yerevan on the opening day.
“The graphic art of surrealists, known throughout the world, will be presented in Armenia for the first
time in such a scale. The climax of the surrealism is, certainly, shown in the art of Dali. It will be a revelation for us, a vital event in Armenia’s art life,” she said.
Irina Baghdamyan also said that, another exhibition “Surrealism and Armenian artists” will open in the National Art Gallery on July 7, which will feature works by Yervand Kochar, Sergey Parajanov, Gayane Khachatryan, Levon Tutunjyan and Arshil Gorki.
Both exhibitions will last till October.
