Yerevan/Mediamax/. On May 6, German earMUSIC/Edel will release the CD single of WhoCares ad-hoc band, set up by the vocalist of "Deep Purple" Ian Gillan and the guitarist of "Black Sabbath" Tony Iommi for fundraising for the Armenian music school.
On the eve of the release Tony Iommi talked to Mediamax.
- WhoCares became your first experience of joint songwriting with Ian Gillan after he joined Black Sabbath for one year in 1983. What was this new experience like and have you drew some parallels between the new and old cooperation?
- The new one was better because we were sitting together, Ian came to my house. On “Born Again” we put down the backing tracks first and then Ian came and sang after. This was a closer collaboration, I enjoy his company.
- You wrote the song “Out of My Mind” right after visiting Armenia in October 2009. Can you please tell - how it happen? Who was “responsible” for what when writing this song?
- I had a riff that I thought would suit Ian. He liked it and we then worked together to build the complete song. The lyric is Ian's, you need to ask him!
- Please tell us how the recording session went at Sarm Studios in London last October that united such superstars as you, Ian, Jon Lord and Nicko McBrain.
- Terrible! No, a fun day, good vibes all round, very inspiring.
- Your daughter’s husband Linde Lindstrom from HIM band also contributed to the track with a beautiful solo. Was it easy - to work with your son-in-law? Did you advise him anything for this track?
- It was Linde's idea what to play. I just told him where I thought it should come, he did it at my studio, so it made it easier.
- WhoCares was created by you and Ian Gillan to raise funds to rebuild a music school in Armenia. The plan is to have the new scholl by next spring – will you come to Armenia to see your “baby”?
- I certainly hope so!
