Yerevan/Mediamax/. Professor Areg Danagoulian and his team at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) have been selected as the 2019 Arms Control Persons of the Year.
Arms Control Association gives the annual award in recognition of individuals or organizations which come up with effective solutions for arms control and prevention of arms spread, as well as for raising awareness of disarmament and the threats posed by weapons.
Prof. Danagoulian and his team were nominated for their work developing an innovative new nuclear disarmament verification process using neutron beams.
They gained the highest number of votes in the online voting, surpassing French President Emmanuel Macron, Foreign Ministry of Sweden and 7 other candidates. The voting was open from December 12, 2019, until January 8, 2020.
Areg Danagoulian has commented on the award, telling Mediamax that “it matters in the sense that it demonstrates that the world understands the importance of science in building a safe and peaceful future for our children as well as Armenian scientists’ contribution to that mission”.
