Armenian diplomat slams Turkey and Azerbaijan at UN Human Rights Council

Yerevan /Mediamax/. Deputy Permanent Representative of Armenia to UN Nairi Petrossian has stated that "Azerbaijan and Turkey wage a large-scale aggression against democracy and human rights in Artsakh and Armenia.”

Addressing the 45th Session of the UN Human Rights Council on October 1, he said:

“Turkey and Azerbaijan claim to be one nation with two states, and they lifted any doubts in this regard, also by their authoritarian way of ruling and expansionist policies pursued towards neighbors.

The stance of Turkey comes as no surprise to us. The Turkish sentiments towards Armenia and the Armenian people is no secret to anyone. It supports Azerbaijan by all possible means to carry out the same genocidal acts in the South Caucasus.”

Nairi Petrossian has recalled that the most egregious identity-based crimes against Armenians by Azerbaijan have been addressed by the European Court of Human Rights on the two separate rulings: one, on the brutal peacetime ax murdering of a sleeping Armenian, and another, on the torture and subsequent killing of an Armenian detainee in Azerbaijan.

Responding to the accusations of the representative of Azerbaijan, he underlined that the current policy of intolerance and xenophobia against Armenia and Armenians pursued by Azerbaijan is well documented and reported, including by the Committee on the Elimination of Racial Discrimination and European Commission against Racism and Intolerance of the Council of Europe.

“Instead of coming up with a presumed counternarrative and accusations, Azerbaijan better concentrates on the issue discussed: racism, racial discrimination, xenophobia and related intolerance. I regret to register that statement by Azerbaijan diagnoses exactly the problem at hand, which is a delusionary vision of a world-wide imaginary Armenian conspiracy, against which it selflessly fights. Azerbaijan would do justice to its own people and to the world at large if it stops burning books for having the word “Armenia” on its frontpage. Should anyone doubt what I just said, we stand ready to substantiate it with tangible evidence,” stated Nairi Petrossian.
