Yerevan /Mediamax/. UN Secretary-General António Guterres has appointed Movses Abelian as the next Under-Secretary-General for General Assembly and Conference Management.
Foreign Ministry of Armenia said that Abelian worked as Assistant Secretary-General for General Assembly and Conference Management since 2016.
He has over 25 years of experience in peace, security issues and conflict resolution, as well as extensive expertise leading complex processes in the UN system, having previously worked as Secretary of the Administrative and Budgetary Committee of the General Assembly and the Committee on Programme and Coordination at the UN.
From April 2011 until March of 2016, Movses Abelian served as Director of the Security Council Affairs Division in the Department of Political Affairs and provided advice to the President and members of the Council and its subsidiary bodies on matters related to the Council’s work, practices and procedures.
Movses Abelian worked as Ambassador and Permanent Representative of Armenia to the UN in 1998-2003 and Deputy Permanent Representative prior to that.
During his diplomatic career, Movses Abelian served in various capacities including as the Chairman of the Fifth Committee and President of UNICEF, Vice-Chairman of the Disarmament Commission, and Facilitator for UN Reform during the 57th session of the General Assembly.
