Yerevan /Mediamax/. Armenia’s National Security Service reported today that it has detected and neutralized a spy network operating in Armenia.

The statement issued by the NSS says that “irrefutable evidence has been obtained that the employees of foreign special services created a spy network in the territory of Armenia involving people working in different units of the Armed Forces.”

“To carry out their activities unhindered and to reduce the risks of being exposed, the people engaged in the intelligence activities created fake accounts on social networks using the data and photos of Armenian women. After that, the representatives of the foreign special services, fluently speaking in Armenian, got acquainted with people holding various positions in the Armenian Armed Forces and turned their online acquaintances into close relations, offering them to provide military information on the locations of different military units of the Armenian Armed Forces, personnel, weapons, ammunition, quantity and types of military equipment, military units and their command staff, defense zones, engineering structures, equipment, etc. for remuneration.”

The people who carried out intelligence activities, in this way included in the spy network two dozen of Armenian citizens holding different posts in the Armed Forces and having access to the information and documents containing state and official secrets.

In exchange for remuneration, the servicemen agreed to pass in parts through various mobile applications the military or other information that became available to them or collected at the request of the representatives of the foreign special services with this committing treacherous actions against the Republic of Armenia.

During the preliminary investigation, more than thirty searches were carried out, items and documents essential for the criminal case were found and seized, including original documents containing military information, as well as samples of receipts confirming the fact of payment in foreign currency for the transfer of information collected at the request of foreign intelligence.

During the preliminary investigation of the criminal case, 19 people were detained on suspicion of high treason, some of who confessed.
