Yerevan/Mediamax/. Prime Minister of Armenia Nikol Pashinyan had a look at the Russian Su-30SM fighters at one of the Armenian Defense Ministry’s units today.

Razminfo reports that the only other countries in post-Soviet zone to have these fighters are Russia, Belarus and Kazakhstan.

In February 2019, Kommersant newspaper covered the signing of the Armenian-Russian agreement on purchase of 4 Su-30SM multirole fighter jets in 2020.

“Not only did the Russian side provide the CSTO ally with a loan for this deal, but it also sold aircrafts to the Armenians for Russian domestic prices instead of the export rates. For the first time in a decade, Armenia is buying new and not used aircrafts,” the newspaper said.

The deal also provides for training of Armenian pilots at Russian military bases.

Arms Export magazine’s Editor-in-Chief Andrei Frolov described the purchase of modern aircrafts by Armenia as “a serious step, which can significantly increase the military potential of the country”.

According to him, Baku would react to the deal negative, as Azerbaijani air force did not possess similar advanced fighters, only having MiG-29 jets modernized in Ukraine.
