Yerevan /Mediamax/. If abortions due to the future sex of the child (selective abortions) continue in Armenia the country may face a serious demographic problem in the nearest future, said oncologist and gynecologist Vahe Ter-Minasyan.
“Today, Armenian families prefer having 1-2 children. Due to the Armenian mentality, one of the children must be male. Selective abortions result from this mentality”, noted the specialist.
The doctor recalled that artificial stopping of pregnancy with a period of up to 12 months upon a woman’s request is legal in Armenia. Artificial stopping of pregnancy with a period of up to 22 weeks may be realized in case of medical and social indications and if a woman agrees.
“Thus, to combat the problem we should rule out illegal abortions which are mainly realized through medicaments”, said Vahe Ter-Minasyan.
According to him, if a woman doesn’t realize how much danger is caused by stopping of pregnancy in domestic conditions through medicaments “adoption of even 100 new laws will be senseless”.
Mediamax recalls that PACE rapporteur on prenatal sex selection Doris Stump stated earlier than Armenia faces the problem of abortions due to the future sex of the child.
On October 3, PACE adopted a resolution on “selection of the child’s sex in the prenatal phase”. According to the document, a child’s sex selection in Albania, Azerbaijan, Georgia and Armenia reached “alarming misbalance”.
