Students diligently working on computers are a familiar picture in the lecture room 203 of the Faculty of Mathematics and Mechanics of Yerevan State University, if you peep into it in the afternoon. One of these students is Sossi Kilegian, who used to bring her own laptop to the university before the lecture room 203 received a batch of powerful computers.
Sossi is involved in the Master’s program “Applied Statistics and Data Science”. Room 203 is a newly opened laboratory for students, which was equipped with modern computers with the funding from 2Hz and Webb Fontaine. The lab opened on April 3.

“I studied computer sciences in the American University. I was always fond of mathematics and data science. My teachers at YSU, Karen Keryan and Mikayel Poghosyan (they secured the launch of the Master’s program – Mediamax) said I could apply for a new Master’s program in the university. So I did! I got admitted, and I’m very happy about it. I can feel that I’ve made substantial progress in the field. I am already working at PicsArt and my focus is on data science,” said Sossi, adding that the program is giving more practical tasks now and she will be able to fulfill them properly in the new laboratory.

“It opened with the support of private sector, so this is a great example of cooperation between education and business. Unfortunately, education is quite cut off from industry, and we tried to mobilize the two fields and bring them to collaboration through this program. Five out of our seven specialized courses are conducted by experts who both teach and practice. The new laboratory will enable the students work with big data,” said Keryan.
