Yerevan /Mediamax/. According to the assessments of Russian Rosatom (State Atomic Energy Corporation) specialists and according to the calculations of OKB Gidropress, the Armenian Nuclear Power Plant (NPP) may be exploited by 2036.
This was stated by Director General of Rusatom Service Evgeni Salkov.
“Already today we may state for sure that the Armenian NPP is at its full strength. After the upgrading works it will in fact be a new plant,” Salkov said.
55 years ago on September 17, 1966 a decision on the construction of first nuclear power plant in Caucasus was made. Today the Armenian NPP is producing over a third of the whole electricity in Armenia and ensures energy security and independence of the country.
“The project of the Armenian NPP in time became a real scientific breakthrough and all designs and scientific approaches are being actively used in the world practice. Works are systematically being carried out on the NPP to raise the security level. Throughout its whole history the plant proved its reliability to the full. Currently, final upgrading works are being carried out on the plant to extend the exploitation of the second power unit till 2026,” Chief Executive Director of Armenian NPP Eduard Martirosyan said.
Within the framework of upgrading the Armenian NPP, works are being carried out on the reactor unit, on modernization of the system of emergency cooling of the zone of the reactor, system of ventilation of node and system of reliable supply.
The program is expected to be completed by the end of the running year which will allow to increase production performance of the Armenian NPP and bring the powers up to 440 MW against current 390 MW.
Armenia’s energy development strategy sets a term for extension of the exploitation period of the Armenian NPP by 2036. With this aim Rosatom and Armenia’s Ministry of Territorial Administration and Infrastructures have set up a task group to work out the concept for the extension of exploitation of Armenian NPP for the second time which will be approved by the yearend/
