Kocharyan: Turkey is the biggest threat to Armenia

Yerevan /Mediamax/. The second President of Armenia Robert Kocharyan believes that "”the current state of Armenia and its army does not allow sober people to think about [military] revanche.”

“At the same time, peace that is too unfair cannot last forever,” he said in an interview with “Pozner” TV program on April 5.

Answering the question about the territories lost during the 2020 war, Kocharyan said:

“I believe that not all is lost, and there is a possibility to negotiate at least the territories that were part of the former Nagorno-Karabakh Autonomous Region.”

The ex-president disagrees with the opinion that “Russia betrayed Armenia” in the last war.

“It is not true. Russia did not provoke the war; on the contrary, it did its utmost to stop it. On October 19, the Russian President made a proposal which could stop the war with a completely different outcome, but it was rejected by the Armenian side, as a result of which several thousand of our people were killed and wounded,” Kocharyan said.

“Our historical orientation towards Russia annoys not only Turkey, but also the Americans,” he noted, stressing that he had never concealed his attitude towards Russia.

Answering the question about the greatest threat to Armenia, Kocharyan said that it comes from Turkey. He believes that if the Armenian-Turkish border opens, “Turkey will do everything to turn Armenia into a kind of [Georgian autonomous region] Adjaria, in terms of its presence in business and economy.”
