Yerevan /Mediamax/. Armenian First President Levon Ter-Petrosyan, commenting on the recent meeting with Armenian President Serzh Sargsyan, said that “it shouldn’t have come as surprise for people who followed my activities”.

Levon Ter-Petrosyan said this in an interview (in Armenian) with iLur.am.

Speaking about problematic relationship with Armenian authorities and establishment of such a meeting in presence of mutual strict charges, Levon Ter -Petrosyan said:

“Firstly, nothing is impossible in political behavior, and secondly, what seems impossible in our reality, is not impossible for normal, well-established states. In case of outside threat, as a rule, inner contradictions are put aside temporarily and all healthy political and social forces are directed at countering the threat of national unity”.

Armenian First President presented his approach as well on what policy Armenian side should adopt in upcoming negotiations.

“The Armenian side should seek to obtain the maximum possible through tough but constructive approach. As for the role of opposition parties and the public, it must be after temporarily freezing inner contradictions and using nothing more than national unity.

Now is not the time to blame authorities for errors and omissions, and it is not the time to demand answers from them. The war will soon move from the battlefield to negotiation or diplomacy front. The leaders of that war would be [Armenian President] Serzh Sargsyan and [NKR President] Bako Sahakyan due to their positions. Even if Sahakyan doesn’t take part in negotiations, Sargsyan cannot neglect his opinion in any case (by the way, I plan to meet Sahakyan as well).

Serzh Sargsyan must feel strong at negotiation table having the nation’s support. But, at the same time, the administration led by him is obliged to make some positive steps to address the needs of the nation, the real fight against corruption and arbitrariness of law enforcement agencies, monopoly behavior, fraud and the arrogance of public officials if they need that support.

Relations between the government and society should be built not on one-sided attitude, but on mutual trust and mutual support. Government cannot ignore the nation and the opposition, and count on their support in difficult times, " said the First President.
