New alliances: The past is challenging the present
What has been covered since the departure of former President Robert Kocharyan has now been laid open. There is a new alliance to challenge the ruling class in Armenia, and this alliance comes from the two former Presidents Levon Ter-Petrosyan and Robert Kocharyan, led by the latter. The facts are astounding: When the campaign period began, they formed a common election watch headquarter, with the ANC, Prosperous Armenia, Heritage and Dashnakstutyn.

Erdogan hysteric – should he resign?
The hysteria in Turkey over the French bill prohibiting the denial of the Armenian Genocide could hardly be more self-damaging or more revealing. Readers of the official Turkish official statement of 24 January will be struck by a tone unworthy of a strong and mature nation and rather be reminded of speeches of some of those Arabic leaders, who have recently been ousted by their people.

Why don’t the Armenian “EPP parties” do their homework?
Last week in Marseille, three Armenian parties made a step towards closer co-operation with the European People’s Party (EPP). For those who don’t know the relevance of such party alliances, it is worth reading the last weekend edition of the Financial Times. There, the analysis of the complete defeat of the British Prime Minister Cameron during the EU summit was explained mainly with his own decision of 2009 to lead his party out of the EPP into a more nationalistic block.

Happy birthday Armenia!
The Republic of Armenia has celebrated its 20th anniversary. This was done in style, big, loud and colourful. I could not understand why priests had to take part in the parade. But otherwise I was impressed, like I have not been since the parade on the Champs-Elysee in Paris on Bastille Day. Some say, why spend so much money on such things when there are still so many other things that require money. As a German, I know this argument, especially regarding military shows. But while it is good to keep an eye on the costs of everything a state does, we must also accept one thing: not even the maturest state will ever be in a condition, where there is absolutely no school to build or hospital to renovate. If you wait for that day, when all will be in order, you must wait forever.

Sting would sing for peace
Today, three things were sent to me in connection with the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict. The first was some feedback on the post-Kazan negotiations mediated by the OSCE Minsk Group. Apparently there are ways to conclude this process fairly quickly, if there is only a small political effort by Azerbaijan to show that they are still serious about this process and if there will be no more arbitrary new demands, as was the case in Kazan upon the arrival of President Aliyev.

The truth about Karabakh
The recent campaign by the MIAK party spreading background facts about Nagorno-Karabakh (NK) and the NK conflict may be motivated by party political reasoning targeting Armenia. I would also agree with those who say that the campaign should rather focus on more selected addressees than impress with large numbers. But just today, a contact from the European Parliament called me to ask for more background about this initiative and to verify some of the things in their document, promoted through the cryptic web address http://www.karabakh-truth.com/pdf/NK_Short_Version.pdf.

Armenia gains new support from the European Parliament
Last week was a good week for relations between Armenia and the EU. The often complicated and misunderstood EU "machinery” produced a new paper with relevance for Armenia. This paper underlined the EU’s commitment to knitting stronger ties with Europe’s East, especially Armenia.

“Sochi agreement is good news for refugees and IDPs”
During their recent meeting in Sochi, Armenia and Azerbaijan agreed on long overdue concrete steps to build up more confidence.
