Kocharyan: My impression is authorities do not need efficient army

Yerevan /Mediamax/. Armenia’s second president Robert Kocharyan referred today to three main components of Armenia’s security – Armed Forces, CSTO and current state of bilateral relations with Russia.

“It is a fact that the Armed Forces of Armenia are not able to defend the borders and security of Armenia on their own. Almost nothing has been done over a year to restore the efficiency of the army and the ammunition. The impression is that these authorities do not need efficient army,” Kocharyan said.

Speaking about the efficiency of the CSTO the former president said:

“CSTO works well only where the interests of all coincide, like it happened in case of Kazakhstan.”

Touching upon the issue of Armenia’s membership in the CSTO, Robert Kocharyan said:

“First, there is no other structure that can replace the CSTO. We must stay, cooperate, but not pin hopes from the point of view of security – nothing will happen except statements”.

Robert Kocharyan said that relations with Russia are the only acting circumstance in the security sphere, but the 2020 war has revealed some problems.

“The absence of border with Russia has shown some limitations in its intervention and assistance. Also, being a mediator, significantly restricts Moscow’s freedom to take steps.”
