Yerevan /Mediamax/. The German Die Welt daily writes that the war in Nagorno-Karabakh is a demonstration of force addressed to Europe by Turkish President Recep Erdogan.

“This war could well have been expected. The fact that Erdogan’s threats are not empty words is known from the Turkish interventions in Syria and Libya. The war is one of the elements of his expansionist foreign policy, aimed at creating a “new Ottoman Empire” led by the great power Turkey,” Die Welt writes in the article “Nagorno-Karabakh - Erdogan’s new war”.

“With this armed escalation in Nagorno-Karabakh, Turkey is demonstrating its hegemony now in the Caucasus, too. There it collides with Russia’s interests, but Turkey does not care - it has been confronting the Kremlin in Syria and Libya for several years now. In both countries, the Turkish leadership is quite successfully promoting its own interests, despite Russia's opinion. Taking into account this experience, it cannot be ruled out that in Nagorno-Karabakh, too, Ankara will not be afraid of a confrontation with the Kremlin,” the author of the article notes.

“Ankara shows again that it considers the war to be a perfectly accepted means for promoting its own interests. Besides, the Turkish intervention in Nagorno-Karabakh is also an attack on the international community. After all, in the Caucasus, Ankara is again betting on the Syrian rebel formations, the way Erdogan has already done in Libya. According to media reports, there are already about a thousand such mercenaries from the Syrian opposition in Azerbaijan,” Die Welt writes.
