Yerevan /Mediamax/. Prime Minister of Armenia Nikol Pashinyan has disclosed details about the agreement he reached with Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev in Dushanbe in September 2018, which concerned reduction of the tension on Armenia-Azerbaijan state border and Armenia-Artsakh line of contact.
Pashinyan has mentioned the agreement in the interview to the Armenian Public TV Company, a part of which he has posted on his Facebook page today. The interview was recorded before Azerbaijan’s attack on Artsakh. It was scheduled for release in the evening of September 27.
“I have not told about this over the last two years out of politeness, but given the incomprehensible behavior or the Azerbaijani President, I will tell today,” noted Pashinyan.
Nikol Pashinyan has said that he did not address Ilham Aliyev with a request – it was the other way round.
“Back then, we were heading toward the election of Yerevan Mayor and we had rallies almost every day. In a number of speeches I delivered, I criticized the situation in Azerbaijan and tried to establish a dialogue with the people of Azerbaijan. The revolution had just happened in Armenia and opposition forces in the region felt very encouraged, which is why Ilham Aliyev asked me to refrain from commenting on the situation in Azerbaijan.
I wrote down every point of the Dushanbe agreement in my notebook. We discussed the points and concluded that we had an agreement. I am pleased with that agreement, because it spared the lives of Armenian soldiers. Now Aliyev claims he “generously” allowed the post-revolutionary government to establish itself in Armenia. This and other developments demonstrate that to Aliyev, Artsakh is not a matter of national interest but simply means to maintaining his power and authoritarian regime in Azerbaijan,” stated Nikol Pashinyan.
