Today we live in a society, which can not imagine life without expressing views on social media. Probably it does have certain advantages. Nevertheless, many participants of active discussions have already forgotten or do not even know about the developments, which unfolded in Armenia 5, 10 or 15 years ago.

To fill the gap Mediamax presents 5/10/15 project, which introduce developments in Armenia 5, 10 and 15 years ago.

•    15 YEARS AGO: MARCH 8-14, 2006

“Seize the moment”

On March 8, U.S. Assistant Secretary of State for Europe and Eurasia Daniel Fried said that the United States “urges Armenian and Azeri leaderships to seize the moment and help bring the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict to a close.”

In his testimony “U.S.-European Relationship: Opportunities and Challenges” before the House International Relations Subcommittee on Europe and Emerging Threats, Fried said in particular:

“U.S. relations with Russia’s neighbors and other countries in Eurasia seem to be viewed by some in Russia in zero-sum terms, a model that we have both publicly and privately told the Russians is false. We seek to work with Russia and others to resolve dangerous and debilitating conflicts in places like South Ossetia, Transnistria, Abkhazia, and Nagorno-Karabakh.”

•    10 YEARS AGO: MARCH 8-14, 2011

A tough statement from the mediators

On March 9, Co-Chairs of the OSCE Minsk Group stated they were “deeply concerned by reports of cease-fire violations along the Line of Contact before and after the March 5 Sochi Summit.”

The mediators said: “Such senseless acts, if confirmed, would contravene the commitment of the parties to refrain from the use of force and to seek a peaceful settlement of the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict.”

The Co-Chairs asked the Personal Representative of the OSCE Chairperson in Office to carry out an immediate investigation with the participation of all sides, as agreed in the March 5 joint statement issued in Sochi by Presidents Dmitry Medvedev, Ilham Aliyev, and Serzh Sargsyan.

The need for “all-comprehensive integration”

On March 10, Armenian President Serzh Sargsyan stated that “the consistently implemented reforms bring Armenia to the need of all-comprehensive integration with the European family.”

At the opening of the Armenian-Latvian Business-Forum in Riga, he said that in that regard   “Latvia’s experience as to achieving compliance with European standards and the values of realized reforms both in economy and other spheres is important for Armenia.”

“In the foreseeable future”

On the same day, Serzh Sargsyan stated that “certain progress” was registered in the stance of Azerbaijan at the meeting in Sochi on March 5.

At the meeting with representatives of the Armenian Diaspora of Latvia, he said:

“Basing on that, I believe that we may come to agreements on the principles of the settlement in the foreseeable future. After reaching an agreement, a new stage of negotiations will be initiated and many issues will be coordinated in detail. Thus, reaching an agreement around the principles will not be the conclusion, but the start of the process.”

“Turkish government is losing its hold on reality”

On March 9, Armenian Foreign Minister Edward Nalbandian stated that “the Turkish government is losing its hold on reality.”

Commenting on the impact of complications in Russia-Turkey relations on the NK conflict in the interview to Russian “Kommersant” newspaper, he said:

“It seems that Turkish government is losing its hold on reality both in external and internal policy. Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoglu declares that the Kurds in Syria today cooperate with Russia like “Armenian gangs” did at the beginning of the 20th century. Such statement is a very serious signal for the international public on what can happen to the Kurds. At the beginning of the 20th century, one of the main organizers of Armenian Genocide in Ottoman Empire Talaat Pasha similarly blamed Russia for “arming and provoking Armenians”. Obviously, not much changed in Turkish ruling clique in a hundred years. If Turkey really wants NKR conflict to be settled, it should stay as far away as possible from the process of settlement.”
