Yerevan /Mediamax/. Armenian President Serzh Sargsyan said that the fact Azerbaijan fully utilized weaponry it recently bought from Russia resonated widely in Armenia.
According to Armenian presidential press service, the President stated this late at night on April 7, receiving Russian Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev who was in Armenia on an official visit.
“Your visit coincided with a difficult period. Azerbaijan once again decided to solve NK issue with force. Azerbaijan began a large-scale operation, using the whole range of weaponry it possessed. Unfortunately, that weaponry was used against civilians as well: children and elders were killed, but this attempt was thwarted owing to professional actions of Defense Army’s soldiers and commanders.
I’m sure you know that the fact Azerbaijan fully utilized weaponry it recently bought from Russia resonated widely in Armenia. It is understandable, as Armenians consider Russia to be the closest friend and ally. Today we have a situation where we cannot exclude the possibility of another provocation, as provocations continue in the information field, and we, obviously not having great illusions, expect Minsk Group Co-Chairs and our allies to make addressed statements and specific actions, because I believe that a second attempt will lead to a large-scale operation.
I’m sorry to say that some of our EAEU partners refused to come to Armenia and participate in the pre-scheduled event. I don’t know how this helped Azerbaijan, but they definitely diminished the authority of our organization,” said Serzh Sargsyan.
It is worth mentioning that the website of Russian government recounts this part of the meeting in the following way:
“At the beginning of the meeting, Armenian President Serzh Sargsyan told Dmitry Medvedev how recent events in NK conflict zone developed, expressing hope that Co-Chair states can provide mediation to normalize the situation. He also expressed his regret regarding the fact that escalation of situation in the region caused cancellation of EAEU intergovernmental session.”
In particular, Dmitry Medvedev said in his response:
“I won’t deny that governmental delegation’s official visit indeed coincided with a very difficult period, but we didn’t change our plans. We believe it is our duty as Armenia’s partner to get information firsthand, as they say, and of course do everything in our power as a partner, ally and Minsk Group participating state to ensure calm development of events. We proceed from the fact that the most important matter now is to keep peace and return to negotiation, even though the background of this negotiation isn’t the best, to put it mildly.”
“As for the postponed EAEU intergovernmental session, I hope and count that there won’t be a pause here. I will make sure to speak with our partners, Eurasian Union colleagues. I believe you can understand their behavior and decision in some measure, because not everyone is well-informed about the current situation and what might be happening. What matters now the most is to not lose the pace, to not create any artificial problems,” stated Russian PM.
