Status is a key issue

On July 6 Presidents of Armenia and Cyprus respectively Serzh Sargsyan and Dimitris Christofias stated reciprocal support regarding the settlement of Karabakh conflict and the Cyprus issue.

“Although each conflict has its peculiarities, there is a common approach for methods of settlement: it must be exclusively peaceful and based on the principles and norms of the international law,” Sargsyan said at the joint news conference with Dimitris Christofias.

The Armenian President stressed that Yerevan’s stance in the negotiation process remained unchanged: the settlement ought to seal the right of the people of Karabakh for self-determination, consolidate of land communication between Armenia and Nagorno-Karabakh, and provide security guarantees.

Serzh Sargsyan underlined that the status of Nagorno-Karabakh was a key issue in the settlement, and the solution had to be acceptable for the people of Nagorno-Karabakh.   According to him, “any solution, which is not accepted by the people of Nagorno-Karabakh, will not be viable and practicable”.
