Yerevan /Mediamax/. Sasna Tsrer Party has issued a statement today "regarding another murder committed by a Russian soldier”.

“The Office of Prosecutor General of Armenia waited until completion of the elections to confirm that a soldier from the Russian military base was arrested in connection with the murder of 57-year-old Julietta Ghazaryan in Gyumri.

However, the crime took place on December 2 and according to media reports, there was a suspicion on the same day that in the early hours of morning, a Russian soldier viciously beat a woman who was employed as a street cleaner and died in the hospital.

Particularly after the murder of the Avetisyan family that happened on 12 January 2015 in the same town, it became clear that the agreement between Armenia and Russia on the latter’s military presence in Armenia along with the legal regulations of Russian Constitution created a mechanism that prevents the Armenian side from fully serving justice against the perpetrator.

Key: Russian base in Armenia

Some media reports indicate that the soldier under suspicion is still at the base and the investigation is being carried out there, the same way as in Permyakov’s case [the soldier who murdered the Avetisyan family – Mediamax].

If so, we should not hope that Russia will extradite him. The Russian Constitution simply prohibits that. In fact, Russian Constitution and authority prevail in the Armenian territory.

If we remain silent and do nothing this time too, another tragedy will not be long in coming. Armenia’s self-governance and authority must be restored in the Armenian territory.

Sasna Tsrer pan-Armenian party urges the Armenian Government to take this tragic occurrence as the reason to at least begin revision of the terms and conditions of Russian military presence and turn that process into an opportunity to build dignified relations with Russia,” reads the statement.
