Yerevan/Mediamax/. Part of Surb Nshan church in Tbilisi collapsed last night.
As the head of the Georgian Diocese of the Armenian Apostolic Church, Bishop Vazgen Mirzakhanyan told Mediamax today, the church has been in an emergency condition for decades.
“The church must have collapsed as a result of an earthquake that hit Tbilisi on May 8 as well as heavy rains,” Vazgen Mirzakhanyan said.
According to him, the Georgian leadership did not take any steps to restore the Armenian church built in 1701.
The head of the Agency for the Protection of Cultural and Historical Monuments, Serzhik Arakelyan, told Mediamax today that they are trying to specify the details of the accident.
Mediamax recalls that fire broke out in Surb Nshan church this January, after which the Minister of Culture of Armenia Hasmik Poghosyan said the works for the fortification of the church will start already this year.
