Yerevan /Mediamax. Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev has commented on Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov’s statement that there are more than 2,000 mercenaries from the Middle East in the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict zone.
Civilnet reports that in an interview with the Spanish EFE agency, Aliyev said:
“High-ranking officials of countries that must be neutral and act on the basis of a mandate given to them by the OSCE use unverified information and rumors. For more than a month, we have received no evidence, no documents, no arguments, just statements. Why do they not see what goes on at the Armenian side, where the mercenaries are fighting? Why did Russia and France, accusing us, not say anything about that?
“This is a discriminatory approach, which we cannot accept. It does not correspond with the mandate of the co-chairs. I have said many times that the mediators must be neutral. If they stand by someone, it is their business, but then they have to withdraw from mediation. If we start blaming those who accuse us of being mercenaries for what they have done in different parts of the world, it will be a very long problem. We do not do that. That is why we expect the same from our partners,” said Ilham Aliyev.
The President of Azerbaijan has also accused Russia of supplying weapons to Armenia.
“Why do not those, who persistently talk about Turkey’s military assistance to us, speak about arms supply to Armenia from Minsk Group co-chair, Russia? Why is no one talking about it? Let’s talk about it, let’s be fair,” he said.
