Yerevan /Mediamax/. Advisor to the Prosecutor General of Armenia Christine Melkonyan told Mediamax today that barrister Amal Alamuddin Clooney will represent Armenia in the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) during "Perincek v. Switzerland” case.

Amal Alamuddin is married to popular American actor George Clooney.

Christine Melkonyan told Mediamax that along with other attorneys, Amal Alamuddin will be among the group of attorneys to represent Armenia at ECHR. Popular counsel Geoffrey Robertson who authored a book on Armenian Genocide is included in the group of lawyers.

Amal Alamuddin specializes in human rights, international criminal law and extradition. Amal Alamuddin has represented WikiLeaks Founder Julian Assange and former Ukrainian PM Yulia Tymoshenko.

This year, the ECHR approved Armenia as a third party in the “Perincek v. Switzerland” case. In March 2007, Turkish nationalist Dogu Perincek was the first in Switzerland to be found guilty of denying Armenian Genocide. He used to call the Armenian Genocide “international lie” for which the Swiss-Armenian Association brought a case before the court for “racial discrimination”.

“Perincek v. Switzerland” case has been in court for around nine years.

This August, Armenia's Prosecutor General and Armenian Government's Accredited Representative at the ECHR Gevorg Kostanyan appealed to the ECHR asking to include Armenia as a third party in Perincek v. Switzerland case.

The sitting of the court is scheduled on January 24, 2015.

As a third party, Turkey is also included in “Perincek v. Switzerland” case.

This March, Mediamax presented “Perincek v. Switzerland” case in details and touched upon its possible implications for Armenia. The article is available here.
