Today we live in a society, which can not imagine life without expressing views on social media. Probably it does have certain advantages. Nevertheless, many participants of active discussions have already forgotten or do not even know about the developments, which unfolded in Armenia 5, 10 or 15 years ago.

To fill the gap Mediamax presents 5/10/15 project, which introduce developments in Armenia 5, 10 and 15 years ago.

•    10 YEARS AGO: JULY 29-AUGUST 4, 2009

“Stronger than ever”

On July 30 Armenian President Serzh Sargsyan stated that if the authors of military menaces addressed to Armenia decide to realize them, they will receive a proper response.

Speaking at the parade of graduates of military educational establishments, President Sargsyan stated that “the Armenian Army will continue its holy mission with pride, remaining the reliable defender of our state’s and the people’s security, an irreplaceable and basic component of regional security and stability”.

“Today we are strong, stronger than ever; our army is solid, modern and capable of fulfilling any task. It has passed with honor the exam of not only war, but also peace, symbolizing the victorious spirit of all Armenians,” Serzh Sargsyan stated.

•    15 YEARS AGO: JULY 29-AUGUST 4, 2014

“Everything depends on us”

On July 30 Head of the Presidential Staff Vigen Sargsyan introduced the motives of Armenia’s decision to join Customs Union to the students and graduates of Luys Foundation.

“Elimination of tariff barriers can really boost certain sectors of economy in Armenia. We think that Armenia has better business climate and better opportunities for investors as compared to Russia, Belarus and Kazakhstan, based on the observation by international rating agencies. We do think that those international companies, which want to explore the large market of Customs Union member states, can consider Armenia in terms of possibilities to start business,” the Head of the Presidential Staff said.

According to Vigen Sargsyan, the economies of Customs Union’s member states are not at the level of advancement that will push our economy when it comes to providing competitive market.

“It might create a tendency to lower standards of economic development.  But everything depends on us. If we set a high bar for us and continue to work with the EU not only on reforms in political and judicial sectors, but also on economic models, we can be very competitive both in the Customs Union market and the European market,” he stressed

“Considering the transportation blockade of Armenia, it is very important to have one competitive advantage in our production cycle. Here transportation logistics and energy resources play an important role. Since we couldn’t change something dramatically with transportation logistics due to the blocked border with Turkey, it was essential to substitute it at least for cheap energy resources, which we did by joining Customs Union. Now we are importing gas and oil products at internal Russian market prices without customs duties. And part of that decision was linked with considerations of Armenia’s security, given the issues relating to Nagorno Karabakh conflict and threats from the Turkish border,” Vigen Sargsyan said.
