Yerevan /Mediamax/. Russian President Vladimir Putin stated in Gyumri today that Russia is going to strengthen its positions in Caucasus.

“Russia is not going to leave Caucasus. Vice versa, we are going to strengthen our positions in Caucasus, basing on the best we received from our predecessors and special relations with the countries of the region including Armenia”, said Vladimir Putin speaking at the Armenian-Russian Forum in Gyumri.

He stressed that Armenia's will to join the Customs Union opens broad opportunities for development of Armenia-Russia cooperation.

“It (the desire to join the Customs Union) is the sovereign choice of the Armenian people and Armenian leadership. Russia will do its best support this area of cooperation with Armenia. Practical preparations for Armenia’s membership to Customs Union started and a large package of legal and administrative issues is to be agreed upon”, said the Russian President.
