Russia finds confusing the “emotional reaction” of Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev to the remarks of Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov about foreign mercenaries in Nagorno-Karabakh, a source in Russian MFA has told TASS.
“To be honest, we do not quite understand the emotional reaction of the respected President Aliyev to the comment of Foreign Minister Lavrov. Perhaps, Mr. President’s aides showed him different reports or presented their own interpretation,” said the source.
Lavrov’s remarks “contained no reproaches against Azerbaijan or any other country,” the source said.
“We spoke about our extreme concern about the entry of mercenary militants into the Transcaucasian region, which the Russian Federation borders. In this regard, we ask our Azerbaijani colleagues to be more careful when they get acquainted with primary sources,”
said the MFA representative.
He has noted that the Kremlin has always been “careful to the utmost” in its role as a mediator.
“President Aliyev has repeatedly stated so himself. We reaffirm our commitment to promoting a peaceful, political and diplomatic settlement of the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict. At the same time, we remain convinced that the penetration of mercenary militants into Transcaucasia threatens the stability and security of all countries in the region, including Azerbaijan and Russia,” added the source.
