Yerevan /Mediamax/. In an interview with "Sputnik”, "Komsomolskaya Pravda” and "Govorit Moskva” Radio stations, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov made a number of statements on the situation in Nagorno-Karabakh today.
Mediamax presents the most important statements Lavrov has made:
On the political settlement
“Political settlement is possible of course. The proposals remain on the negotiating table, their content is already known: it is the gradual liberation of the regions around Karabakh with the observation of security guarantees of Karabakh, provision of a reliable connection between Armenia and Karabakh before the final status of Karabakh is determined.”
On the need of ceasefire
“It is necessary to meet immediately with military and coordinate the very mechanism of control over the ceasefire, which is mentioned in our document and which no one has even begun to discuss yet. I confirmed the relevant signals just half an hour ago, when the Foreign Minister of Azerbaijan called me. We send the same signal to our Armenian colleagues”.
On military observers
“Now, not even the peacekeepers, but the military observers, should participate in the verification mechanism. They would suffice. It would be perfectly correct if these were our [Russian] military observers, but it is up to the parties to decide.
Of course, we proceed from the fact that our allied relations, relations of strategic partnership, will be taken into account in Yerevan and Baku.”
On the military resolution to the problem
“We disagree with the position Turkey has voiced, which was expressed several times by President Aliyev. There is no secret here: we cannot share the statement that there is, and is permissible, a military solution to the conflict. "
On Turkey’s role
“We have never qualified Turkey as our strategic ally. Turkey is a very close partner; in many areas this partnership is strategic. Politics in the Turkish and in any other direction must proceed from reality, and politics must avoid materializing the principle that war is the continuation of politics. This is my deep conviction, although, of course, there are certainly situations when aggression is unleashed against you, then the guns should not be silent.” --0--
