Yerevan /Mediamax/. On October 5, Russian President Vladimir Putin appointed member of the Federation Council Sergey Melikov temporary acting head of Dagestan, which borders with Azerbaijan.
Sergey Melikov, an ethnic Lezgin, was born in 1965 and is a career military (intelligence).
In 2011, he was the Commander of the Joint Group of Forces for Counter-Terrorism Operations in the North Caucasus Region of the Russian Federation.
In 2014-2016, Sergey Melikov was the plenipotentiary representative of the Russian President in the North Caucasian Federal District.
In 2016-2019, he held the position of the First Deputy Director of the Russian Guard.
In 2016 he was awarded the rank of Colonel General.
