Yerevan /Mediamax/. Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan said at the cabinet sitting today that the Azerbaijani border checkpoint operating from the night is not on the territory of Armenia but in Eivazly section.

“Yesterday an unofficial notification was received from Azerbaijan that from the midnight of November 11 they are going to carry out customs and passport control over Armenian citizens and cargo,” he said.

Nikol Pashinyan said it was possible to avoid any possible border control on that road “but the cost would have been the corridor logic which was unacceptable for us.”

“Armenia’s position on regional communications has always been that they should be reopened without any extraterritorial context and with appropriate customs and passport control. That is, we have never discussed and will not discuss any corridor logic. It is fixed in the trilateral format of the deputy prime ministers of Armenia, Russia and Azerbaijan, and in recent weeks this logic and agreement has been publicly confirmed by Russia. It was in this context that Azerbaijan made yesterday’s decision,” the head of the government said.

He said that Armenia as well will install customs and passport control points at the Goris-Kapan road section if necessary.

Nikol Pashinyan said that after receiving yesterday’s notification from Azerbaijan a decision was made to direct the Armenian citizens traveling through that section to the Kapan-Aghvani-Tatev-Halidzor-Shinuhayr M2 highway for them to travel through it.

“Yesterday’s decision of Azerbaijan does not change the situation for the Iranian trucks except that now they can travel through Tatev-Aghvan road without additional customs fee,” he noted.

Pashinyan said that as a result of the traffic change logic no village is cut off, though in case of several villages the need to raise the quality of roads arises and this issue will be resolved as soon as possible.

“A new environment is being created over Armenia, and we must do everything to make it correspond to our long-term strategic interests and we are moving that way,” he added.
