Yerevan /Mediamax/. Russian President’s Spokesman Dmitry Peskov has said today that the functions of the Russian peacekeepers in Nagorno-Karabakh have yet to be clarified.
TASS reports that Peskov has said:
“The functions have yet to be clarified because the joint statement did not specify.”
He has added that there has been no talk of Russian peacekeepers guarding cultural and religious sites in the region. “And I cannot say whether it will be part of their duties or not,” said Peskov.
He has also said that Turkey’s statement on opening a monitoring center in Karabakh is at odds with the Kremlin’s view.
“This is not in line with our understanding,” he said. Peskov has specified that the center should be located in the “native territory of Azerbaijan”.
On November 10, Dmitry Peskov stated that the creation of a monitoring center on the territory of Azerbaijan was not spelled out in the joint statement of the leaders of Azerbaijan, Armenia and Russia but was “subject to separate agreement.” Answering the question which territory the statement mentions in connection with possible establishment, he stressed that “not Karabakh”.
According to Peskov, the existing agreement does not provide for presence of Turkish peacekeepers in Nagorno-Karabakh. Spokeswoman of the Russian Foreign Ministry Maria Zakharova has made a similar statement.
