Yerevan /Mediamax/. Azerbaijan does not yet support the involvement of Russian military observers in the mechanism for ceasefire monitoring in Nagorno-Karabakh.
TASS reports that Azerbaijani President’s aid Hikmet Hajiyev has made that statement in the interview with El Mundo.
“Azerbaijan conducts operations not in the territory of another country, but on the territory under its sovereignty, and we do not think that sending these military observers is appropriate right now,” Hajiyev said.
Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov stated on October 14:
“Now, it is not the the peacekeepers but the military observers that should participate in the verification mechanism. They would suffice. It would be perfectly correct if these were our [Russian] military observers, but it is up to the parties to decide. Of course, we proceed from the fact that our allied relations, relations of strategic partnership, will be taken into account in Yerevan and Baku.”
