Yerevan /Mediamax/. French Secretary of State for European Affairs Harlem Desir has hailed EU Council’s provision of the mandate to the European Commission on starting talks around a new legal basis for relations with Armenia.

The statement disseminated by Harlem Desir notes that the decision is an important stage for the EU and Armenia which has been an Eastern Partnership member state since 2009.

“According to the exclusive association resolution backed by France, the future Agreement will allow strengthening economic, political and cultural contacts between EU and Armenia simultaneously respecting Armenia’s decision to join the Eurasian Economic Union”, said the Secretary.

Harlem Desir expressed confidence over Armenian authorities’ constructive involvement in the talks calling for earliest signing of the Agreement and reiterating France’s readiness to assist Armenia in implementation of reforms needed for the country’s modernization and economic development.

It should be noted that Armenian Foreign Minister Edward Nalbandian has made a statement attaching importance to the provision of the EU’s mandate to Armenia.
