Yerevan /Mediamax/. The Department of Public Relations of the Staff of Armenian President Armen Sarkissian has issued a statement in response to the questions from the media about the constitutional referendum.

“The President has signed the decree confirming that the referendum should take place on April 5, guided by Article 206 of the Constitution, which indicates that the President declares referendum within three days after the National Assembly makes the corresponding decision.

At the same time, given the importance of constitutional reforms, rule of law and maintenance of Armenia’s global reputation, the President does not rule out further discussions on the matter, consultations with social and political associations, experts, the National Assembly, the government and the Constitutional Court, and cooperation with corresponding international organizations and experts.

The President has consistently expressed his principled stance on suitability and necessity of settling key issues in state and social affairs through the direct expression of will of the people,” the statement reads.

On February 7, President Sarkissian said in the interview to Mediamax, Shant TV Company and Aravot newspaper that “turning to the people is not a drastic measure” and “expression of will of the people is very valuable in the 21st century”.
