World, we will punish your “son of a bitch”

After Ilham Aliyev was elected President of Azerbaijan in 2003, the first thing he did was finishing the job his father started – destroying what was left of the medieval Armenian cemetery and its masterpiece khachkars [cross-stones] in Nakhijevan. Aliyev then built a firing range in that place. His message to the world was that he would do whatever he wanted and not give a damn. And the world tolerated it.

On 31 August 2012, Ilham Aliyev reached a criminal agreement with Hungarian PM Viktor Orbán and brought back to Baku Ramil Safarov, the man who axed Armenian officer Gurgen Margaryan in his sleep and was serving a life sentence in Hungary for that crime. Moreover, Aliyev awarded Safarov. And the world tolerated it.

After the April War in 2016, Ilham Aliyev proved that he had a special attitude toward murderers by awarding the officer who beheaded an Armenian soldier. And the world tolerated it.

In March 2015, Ilham Aliyev stated that “the international law is not working now and international agreements are just papers with no value.” And the world tolerated it.

In February 2017, Ilham Aliyev signed a decree appointing his wife Mehriban Aliyeva, de-facto leader of the all-powerful Pashayev clan, the First Vice President of Azerbaijan. And the world tolerated it.

The list goes on, but I do not see a point. You will accept the rest of it too, being guided by the "he may be a son of a bitch, but he's our son of a bitch" policy.

We, Armenians, will tolerate no more. This time we will deliver a punishment that will end not only Aliyev’s hopes to seize Artsakh but also, possibly, his power in Azerbaijan.
